Lamastre (Sprint) 08/91. My third tri-season. This race is located in the middle of the Ardeche. This year was damn hot and the water given to me by this nice guy will soon fall on my head. One funny story. After 2k, I took a wrong way and I became first! Hopefully, I was not DQed, and I came back on the course.
Vouglans (MD) 18/08/91. My first Middle distance tri! That's why I look so happy on the picture. This race is one on my favourite. The organisation is perfect, the whole race is perfect (except the first climb, 1.5 kms at 18%!). At that time, I was racing with a sexy swimsuit! :-)
Bourg-en-Bresse (OD) 04/06/94. I was living in the US at that time. This was my second race in France. This race is at 150 kms from Lyon and it's a nice olympic distance. Unfortunatly it does not exist anymore.
Muncie, Indiana, USA (half-IM) 08/94. My first tri in the US! Hot conditions (95% humidity, 37 deg. cel.). It was tough but good!! Chuckie V won this one. I still proudly wear the long slieve T-shirt from the Endurathlon. My friend Timothy Gotsick was too strong!! On that picture, I wear the TGVR singlet and I ride my brand new TREK 2200 from Westhill bikes. That's why I'm soooo fast! :-)
St Jean de Luz (LD) 08/09/95, 20k to go!. My favourite race!! This was my first long distance tri. It's located in the Pyrennees. In the middle of the (hilly) bike course, people cheer in spanish! Guess why? Yeah, we are in Spain for 40k!! The run was 30k and I was feeling sooooo fast. My children came with me for the last 200m and I crossed the finish line with them.
St Jean de Luz (LD) 08/09/95. Finish line. Axel and Johanna come to cross the finish line with me. Sooooo great! :-)
Nice (LD) 01/10/95, Worlds. My first worlds. :-) That race is incredible, especially the mass start: 1300 tri-geeks swimming like hell til' the first turn!! Like a washing machine. The average level is really high (just like the entry fee!!).
Nice (LD) 01/10/95, Worlds. YES, I look relax but trust me, I'm racing!!! :-) I think that it's km 80.
Nice (LD) 01/10/95, Worlds, 20k to go!.
Valence (SD) 12/05/96, bloody cold day! My first race with Saint-Priest. 10 deg. cel. in the water and outside. However, it is organized by my prev. tri-club and I have many friends there. I did the bike course many many time when I was living there.
Coupe de France de Duathlon (4/24/4) A. Brosse, J.M. Fontvielle, D. Liope, P. Michel and me on the starting line, ?/?/96. We were not that fast on the bike but we had a lot of fun. By the way it's a team race and the finish time is taken on the third. We crossed the line with Jean-Max and David.
Same race. Leading the pack during the first running part.
@^!%@^!% pedals (on the left side)!!
Leading the pack at the end of the bike.
Bessey (training camp) winter 96, the french big-four! From left to right, David Liope, Eric "new-red man" Villena, Laurent Bourgoin and me. It was 5 deg. Celsius outside but eh ... we were (almost) Ironmen!
Roth (IM) 14/07/96, the dream-team, ready to beat Leder! :-) Take a look at those incredible legs (in the middle!), it's Eric Villena, the new-red-man. It's one of my favourite race too. After some terrible cramps in the water, the bike was fine and during the marathon, after having passed David Liope at km 4, I had a strong cramp again. I finished the race with him and we crossed the finish line hand-in-hand. Of course, it was a great personal victory for me and really intense. Even if your body screams to stop, the sensation of crossing an IM finish line is pure fun!
Finish line of IM Europe'96. One of my most emotionally intense finish.
Vouglans (MD) 18/08/96, running like hell to catch Jean-Marie Le Borgne!. You think I'm not crazy enough to race a MD tri one month after the IM? Yes I am!! :-) But it's Vouglans!! I swam like a rock! I wanted to quit but David was there and I did the bike. Again, I wanted to quit (I was feeling soooo tired) but again, David was there with his MB. The run was incredible. I never ran that fast there! I catched Jean-Marie 5k before the finish line.
Vouglans (MD) 18/08/96, Greg's style! I always do that at the end of a successful race. :-) I was 48th at the end and I passed 101 guys during the run.
Saint Priest Triathlon at the Vaulx-en-Velin Tri(SD) 17/09/96. It's a team race. We are a group of 7 at the start. I was in the first team. We were 5th a the end and 2nd of the Rhone department. We qualified for the french champs, one week later and 2 weeks before Nice.
Finish of Ancone (Coupe de France des Clubs) (SD) 22/09/96. The french champs. The transition area was full of strong triathletes including Simon Lessing himself (who is racing for a french club). We were of course a small club there but it was fun.
Valence (SD) 11/05/97, running like hell with Rachid! Back to Valence but this time with warmer conditions. We were 5 of Saint Priest in the second transition and we started like for a 400m. At km 3, we were still in less than 3'20" per km. I was first this time (and 35 overall) but he was in front of me for some other races! He is a strong runner.
Valence (SD) 11/05/97! Victory's mine! :-)
Paladru (OD) 01/06/97, rain, rain and more rain! Nice place and nice tri. We received water from the start til' the end!!
Paladru (OD) 01/06/97, last (rainy) 500m.
Lamastre (SD) 15/08/97. First race 2 weeks after a training week at the Alpe-d'Huez with Jean-Luc Capogna. Believe me, after a week of Alpe-d'Huez climbing, 2 weeks are not enough if your name is not Capogna! It was a sprint distance with a downhill bike and it was: 1/ too short 2/ too downhill! :-) However, if you want to do the Alpe-d'Huez training week, go for it because: 1/ it's great 2/ it's hilly (take your 39x26!) 3/ Jean-Luc is a nice guy 4/ He explains carefully why you swim like a rock. 5/ You sleep so well there after 3 workouts per day!
Lamastre (SD) 15/08/97. You see how tired I am! :-) My wife took that picture because we have exactly the same, at the same place, in the same position but 9 years ago for my first tri!! In 89, my rank was almost the same, but taken from the end! :-)
Start of the Lyon Marathon 26/09/97. My last dream race! It was damn cold (around 10 deg. cel.). I trained 2 months like hell for this race (up to 115 km per week). I took a training plan from Bernard Brun (a french coach). I thank him very much because it worked well.
Lyon Marathon, 3k to go! 26/09/97. No wall! Really a dream race. My coach (G. Margerit) was where the picture was taken. I told my wife that I will do it in 2h48' and I did 2h48'13". Ok, I'm a bloody liar! The pace was even (between 3'55 and 4'05" per km). I did the half marathon in 1h23'37". After 3 "real" marathons (not including Roth of course), doing less than 3h and moreover less than 2h50' is a big personal victory. 2 other triathletes of our big four did the race too, following almost the same plan as me. David did 3h01' after hitting the wall at km 39 and Eric new-red-man did 3h03' (their first attempt!)
Laurent Bourgoin and me before the last long training session before Zurich. It was a 6h bike session with a lot of hills. We finished frozen under an heavy rain. Pure fun. :-)
IM Switzerland'98. Top of the heart-break hill in third loop. Yes, it's quite hilly!!
IM Switzerland'98. Finish line!! I was so happy to break the 3h30' barrier on the marathon that I was able to use my ol' Greg Welch style to pass the finish line!
Nice'98. Walkin' in the streets at 6 AM.
Nice'98. End of the bike. Spinning before the run. The swim was way tooooooooooo long and I lost 21' compared to 96!! However, it's still a great race the swim start is always impressive (and scary for a top-level swimmer as me!!).
Nice'98.
Nice'98. Start of the run. See how fast I started! The way back was not the same! :-) However, I shaved 10' on my previous run PR there (thanks to Francois Modave, my new coach!).
Nice'98. Finish line. Tough finish as usual in Nice. I'm always too fast there.
Nice'98. Annick Souhami from Austin Tx. First timer in Nice. She did well and I had to push hard to catch her on the bike! Thanks Ed for the pictures!!
Paladru'99. Finishing the 10k of the OD with Jean-Pierre Guillaume, my swim training partner.
Trévoux'99.
Trévoux'99.
Trévoux'99.
Trévoux'99.
Val d'Aran'99 - Start. Notice the beautiful winner on my left side (Robin Rooke!).
Val d'Aran'99 - first transition. Still well!
Val d'Aran'99 - Bike finish. I've just been passed by Robin!
Val d'Aran'99 - second transition. Wow, it hurts!
Val d'Aran'99 - This is the end my friend!
Val d'Aran'99 - Half an hour lying like this ... but I've got my spot for Zonfingen
Vassivière, French Champs'99. Fear!! :-)
Vassivière. My wave's start (age-group men).
Vassivière. Far away from the front! :-(
Vassivière. End of the first loop. Still far away but it's getting better.
Vassivière. Second transition.
Vassivière.
Vassivière. End of the first loop. I'm soooooo fast! :-)
Vassivière. Still one place to gain in the last 100 meters. Not-so-bad race. 106/140 but happy to be part of it!
Vassivière. YES, Im proud to be there!!! :-)
Vassivière. Me and Isa Mouthon, french champ!
Col de Turini. Route des grandes Alpes'00.
