SCILAB Sparse meeting, 07/12/2001

The venue of John Gilbert was the opportunity to organize this meeting, with the objective to discuss the present and the future concerning sparse matrix support in SCILAB. The meeting took place on December 7, 2001, and was hosted by INRIA Rocquencourt.

Talks and discussions

• Maurice Goursat (METALAU project) introduced the meeting.

• Serge STEER (METALAU project) presented the current support for sparse matrices in SCILAB. Slides in postscript format.

• John GILBERT (Xerox Palo Alto Research Center) presented the existing sparse matrix support under MATLAB. He explained that in the design, ease-of-use was far more important than efficiency. Slides in powerpoint format/ tranlslation in html.

• Bruno PINCON presented SCISPT, a SCILAB toolbox which provides an interface for 2 direct solvers:
  • UMFPACK v3.1 of Tim Davis, and
  • a Cholesky supernodal multifrontal solver of Sivan Toledo from the TAUCS library;
  • and also 3 SCILAB utility macros to read an Harwell Boeing matrix, plot the pattern of a matrix and compute the condition number of a matrix with the N.Higham and F. Tisseur algorithm.

• Jocelyne ERHEL (ALADIN project) presented SCILIN, a toolbox of SCILAB for solving large sparse linear systems that could be included in the core of SCILAB. Slides in pdf format.

• Jean-Yves L'Excellent (ReMaP project) presented
  • a general parallel direct solver, MUMPS,
  • SCILAB parallel, and
  • plans to use SCILAB for interfacing parallel sparse solvers in a metacomputing environment.

• Jean-Paul BOUFFLET (Universite de Technologie de Compiegne) talked about orderings and their importance and proposed an ordering package for SCILAB. Slides in compressed postscript format.

• Frederic Desprez and Eddy Caron (ReMaP project) could not attend the meeting because of another meeting the same day in Lyon.
